HOUSE FIRE SURVIVOR STORIES

Hear directly from the voices of children who have survived house fires. Each child in this video has survived a house fire because they knew what to do when the alarm went off.

Annabella’s Story

On the day of the fire, 16 year old Annabella was home alone with her dog, reading on the couch. When she took a break to go upstairs, she heard the smoke alarm go off and saw smoke coming in from the vents. Annabella knew right then that she had to get out fast. The fire started in the furnace room in the basement where wires had short-circuited and caught the vent on fire.

Luke’s Story

In a multi-generational household, it’s important everyone knows the fire escape plan – just ask 10 year old Luke. Luke and his family were fast asleep the night their home fire started. His mother woke to the sound of the smoke alarm and charged down the hallway to find the kitchen blanketed in a haze of smoke and the oven shooting fiery sparks. Luke started down the hallway, but his father hurriedly scooped him up and carried him outside.

Lisa’s Story

All it takes is a quick test of the smoke alarm to avoid disaster. Just ask 15 year old Lisa. It all happened so fast – one moment Lisa was watching TV with her sister and aunt, and the next, BOOM! There was a loud crash from the kitchen and smoke everywhere. Lisa’s aunt had forgotten to turn off the stove, which caused a glass pot to explode, sending flames shooting onto the carpet.

Tegan’s Story

What started as a birthday celebration quickly turned into a race against time. 7 year old Tegan doesn’t remember much about the day his house caught fire — just that it was his mom’s birthday. Suddenly, there were a lot of flames, loud popping noises – then the oven blew up. He heard the alarm go off, and the last thing he remembers seeing is his home burning down.

Faith’s Story

Without the beeps from the smoke alarm, 10 year old Faith believes her family never would have survived. Faith was in her bedroom reading. Moments later she heard the smoke alarm go off and sprinted down the hallway to tell her mom. Her mom immediately called the fire department and her dad rushed them out of the house into their trailer camper. Faith remembers seeing the flames shooting out of her bedroom window.
